Smart Semiconductors (formerly Philips Semiconductors) recently released its new LPC2478 microcontroller, a Flash-based ARM7 MCU that provides integrated LCD support in the industry. The LPC2470 is also available as a flash-free version. The new microcontroller is equipped with dual ARM High Speed Bus (AHB), which enables synchronization of multiple high bandwidth peripherals including LCD, 10/100 Ethernet, USB host/OTG/device, and two CAN channels. This new range of Enzhip microcontrollers significantly reduces costs, space and power consumption and is ideal for industrial, consumer, retail and medical system products that are widely used in LCD panels and require network or Internet connectivity.

"Small LCD displays can be seen everywhere in everyday life, from mobile phones and portable media players to in-car entertainment, GPS and sales terminals," said Geoff Lees, General Manager of Enzhip Semiconductor Micro Controller Production Line. Systems, everywhere. LCD screens are also gaining popularity in some industrial and medical devices that require high-speed communication support. Our microcontrollers LPC2478 and LPC2470 provide an innovative, cost-effective, low-power solution for LCD applications, as well as an important complement to Enzhip's extensive line of ARM-based MCU products."

NZP LPC2478 and LPC2470 microcontrollers support most static LCD displays (1024) × 768 pixels, 15-order grayscale monochrome, and 24-bit true color TFT panel per pixel). For embedded system designers, LCD can be used to execute code on a chip, get frame data from external memory, and reduce bus conflicts. In addition, the new controller provides 512KB, high-speed 128-bit embedded flash memory with built-in error correction capabilities to ensure maximum reliability. LPC2478 and LPC2470 require only a single voltage (3.3V) power supply, have a unique real-time clock (RTC), and are equipped with 2KB SRAM with batteries, which allows the microcontroller to consume only a small amount of current when in hibernation, while the device can quickly resume operation when external interruptions occur or user-defined times are reached.

Enzhip LPC2478 and LPC2470 microcontrollers support a wide range of peripherals, including Ethernet, USB host/OTG/device, two CAN channels, four UART, three I2C buses, dual input and dual output I2S, SPI, SSP, RTC, ADC/DAC, SD/MMC card interface, and external interface to connect SRAM, SDRAM and NOR flash memory in addition to LCD interface.

ENZIPP LPC2478 and LPC2470 microcontrollers will be available in April 2007, and their development tools will be demonstrated at Embedded World 2007 in Nuremberg, Germany under booth number #12-442. Both microcontrollers are available in 208 TFBGA and LQFP packages.
